At present, one quarter of its land is underlain with permafrost and contains a large amount of vulnerable carbon. The region accounts for about one half of the world wetlands and has large area of aquatic ecosystems including lakes and ponds, which is a major source of greenhouse gases (e.g., methane). Permafrost degradation and thawing lakes and ponds have been observed. All these changes affect the global climate and socioeconomic systems through influencing greenhouse emissions, albedo changes, and land use and land cover. During the last two decades, NASA, DOE, NSF, and USGS have extensively funded us to examine these feedbacks by advancing various components of an integrated global system model. Here my presentation will focus on our research progress on the role of the Arctic ecosystems in the global climate and socioeconomic systems using the integrated system model. The research progress and modeling tools advanced for the Arctic shall be a valuable asset for the third pole region research.
